Farmers Service Company was started in 1953 by Marshall and Arlene Mays as a Private Dealer carrying Southern States Coop products. Our first place of business was on Second Street in Amherst, Virginia. The building was originally used as a livery stable for the Town of Amherst, until it was destroyed by a fire in the mid 60's. It is now the site of Amherst Publishing.

In 1960 we became incorporated and the name changed to Mays Farmer Service Co., Inc. In 1963 we expanded into petroleum distribution with the purchase of our Bulk Oil Facility in Nelson County at the vilage of Colleen. Our business grew in Nelson and in 1985 we built a new metal building to accommodate the growth into feed and farm supply along with Petroleum, Tires, Batteries, and Accessories.

Mays Farm Building In Lynchburg

In 1990 Southern States offered us the opportunity to purchase the Lynchburg store on Campbell Ave and in 1991 we expanded by obtaining the Southern States Brookneal store. Later that year Mays Heating & Air, Inc. was formed as a seperate corporation.

In 1999 Mays added Propane delivery and installation to the roster of services provided, also adding a line of propane heathers, stoves, fireplaces, inserts, and logs.

In 2004 Mays sold the Petroleum liquids, gas, diesel, and home heating fuels to Tiger Fuels in Lovingston.

Mays Farmers Service now operates out of four locations: Amherst, Arrington, Lynchburg, and Brookneal, serving threemajor counties: Amherst, Nelson, Campbell, and parts of Appomattox and Halifax and the City Of Lynchburg.

Although we have grown and changed over the years, our reason for being here remains the same; provide farm supplies and services to all farmers and farm families in our area.
